Susie Wright is a London born artist and curator, who lives and works in Germany. She is a contemporary landscape artist who holds the

environment at the heart of her practice. Using a range of experimental processes and her own personal iconography, she draws on her experience of context and place to create multi -layered series and collections.

Susie works conceptually, exploring the tension between chance and self-determination, nature and culture, freedom and the individual, the passage of time and loss, climate change and the power of the Earth. She brings these threads together to create works on paper, painting, digital drawing and installation .

Susie’s goal is to vibrantly engage you as audience, provoking curiosity and a deep exploration of our psychological and social spaces.

Artist Statement

My practice involves physicially exploring landscapes, urban environments and spaces at the margins. I evaluate, collect, select objects and things found as I walk on the way, a process, which I call ‘swalkeling’. This process throws up unexpected content and ideas for my work. My memory of place and the photographed landscape that I encounter digitally (the images we consume through the news ) are also included in my practice of discovery and offers a wider context for our current existence. As a result, my imagery derives from an eclectic mix of material objects, photographic memory and ideas recorded in free association.

In making my work, I use experiemental processes, all of which contain an element of chance. I deliberately relinquish control and let vectors in the creative space take over, for example; my ‘confetti drifts’ are papers caught in vectors; I allow ‘gravity’ to move paint across surfaces; I spray manually with colour and air using my own emissions in ‘CO2 puffs’, my ‘automatic drawing’ process taps into the subconscious, I make’ machine duplicated drawings’ where my drawing machine takes over and ‘digital spills’ using the flood of pixels to colour in my digital drawing. These elements and more, find their form in two and three dimensional works. There is so much to say about our world and our environment that my works, by necessity, are full of references and meaningful content. They are made with the intention of creating deeper conversations about the themes they address, some of which are painful or even beautiful to behold. Seen as collections they create an even richer mix with the addition of written works seen on my web pages.

I travel light and often make in transit, portability and the effective use of resources are an important ethical question for me. Much of my work uses paper based or repurposed materials with on demand custom prints and my use of photography, offers a material economy. I run my own studio ecosystem in which I recycle and upcycle my work.

This website and my presence on instagram @susiesatelier is also a key part of my output. The ‘atelier’ manifests as an online gallery, a physical space and an umbrella for collaboration. It is also the place where my public accountability lies. I feel strongly that my artistic practice should serve you as my public, the range of artworks and collections on offer give you a choice about how you engage and space for your own interpretation. In exhibitions, I publish my upcoming shows and give further incites into my series and collections. If you would like to be invited to VIP events and know more about my working processes, please sign up at the bottom of any page to recieve my free monthly newsletter.
